Trouble on J.R.'s Horizon
Written by Nick Sclafani

(Boulder-CO) There is storm brewing on J.R. Smith's horizon. No, it's not with George Karl (this time), but rather with the law as he could be cited for contempt of court for failing to appear in Municipal Court on Tuesday in Millstone, New Jersey, for a pre-trial conference on traffic summonses related to his car accident resulting in friend Andre Bell's death back in June of 2007.

But his problems don't stop there.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban evidently has it out for Smith in defense of his own player. Cuban's war path stems from the final seconds of the first half when Smith threw an elbow toward the head of Dallas swing man Antoine Wright that missed. Cuban stated in the linked article above, "I do take exception with players throwing elbows that could have severely injured one of our players. I was very cordial in letting Mr. Smith know (at halftime) that I will be turning it into the league, and I expected him to be suspended for it.''

In an attempt to smooth things over, J.R. Smith sent a peace offering to the Dallas locker room last night that wasn't graciously accepted by Cuban after the Nuggets prevailed in the final seconds of regulation. Smith's offering was a pair of signed shoes of which Cuban sent back with this message, "I sent them back, saying he should sell them, if you could get anything for them, to help pay for the fine he was going to face.''

If they were the shoes worn in his 1-14 shooting performance I can't blame Cuban for sending them back...

Apparently his lawyer advised him that he did not need to attend and is taking responsibility for him not being there. The court said that he needed to attend regardless, but apparently his attorney didn't think that was the case.

The whole Cuban thing is a joke... dude needs to check himself. It's fine if he wants to report it to the league office, but owners have no business running onto the court and yelling at players. JR probably won't get fined because nothing connected and it didn't cause any escalation or even a technical foul charged to anyone... so it would be a stretch to fine or suspend anyone.

And yeah, we need JR and Kleiza to get back on track.. holy crap, that game was rough.

I agree with you on all fronts, Stumble. Cuban is a sideshow. He may have a ton of money invested in his team, but the guy acts like he's a player or coach way too often. Bottom line is you can pay to sit behind your team every night, but until you lace up a pair of sneakers you can't get involved with what happens on the floor.

LK and J.R. desperately need to get it together. LK more than J.R., but I can't remember a pair of games that J.R. has shot worse in than these last two. At least J.R. is passing the ball well while not turning it over so much. LK just looks lost at times...

I third that motion...J.R. and L.K. both need to get their heads in the game. I'm not criticizing them, I am just saying they are needed.

Mark Cuban is calling the kettle black. When he suggests to the league that someone should be suspended they probably absolutely will NOT suspend that person. He has no credibility so why would they listen to him. Least of all the fact that since it was an 'almost hit' what's the point. I feel sorry for his team; it must be tough for anyone to play for two head coaches.

Cuban needs to focus on his business ventures and not on JR's bows.
