Nuggets & Pistons at it Again

(Denver-CO) The Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons are at it again. Only this time marquee players aren't trading places, but rather cash, picks, and seldom used players. Today's trade sent Arron Afflalo, Walter Sharpe, and cash considerations from the Detroit Pistons to Denver for a future second round pick from the Nuggets.

Afflalo will be a third-year player next season who averaged 4.9 points last season in 16.7 minutes per game in 2008-09. Sharpe was a rookie last season who only saw action in eight games. Along with both players, Denver will have $350,000 to apply to Walter Sharpe's $736,420 salary next season.

In my humble opinion, this trade was Denver scratching Joe Dumar's back from scratching theirs and trading Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess for Allen Iverson five games into last season. See, Detroit needed to clear a little salary cap space to pursue a big man and after the recent signings of Ben Gordan and Charlie Villanueva they will be able to do so with an estimated $3.5 million in cap space after completing this deal. As for the Nuggets, Afflalo will compete with Sonny Weems for what appears to be the back-up shooting guard spot, but I doubt Denver has much need for Sharpe's services with the current roster.

Jeremey over at Round Ball Mining Company has more on the Nuggets trade exception situation and I highly suggest you give it a read.

Go Nuggets!

Wow, Nick. Read up a little on Arron Afflalo, as you are severely underestimating what he will bring to the Nuggets. Simply put, he is a better player than Dahntay Jones. He shot over 40% from 3's last year (and that was with over 100 attempts). Plus, he is a rugged defender. Yes, at times Jones played the defender role very well...but in all honesty, he was just an above average defender, nothing special. Afflalo from what I hear, is an excellent defender! I am stoked about this deal.

WAY better than Dahntay. The Pacers are suckers hahaha...

Afflalo is younger, more talented, has a better jumper, can actually handle the ball and create for others... the only thing Dahntay has over him is 1" and some more hops, which he could hardly put to use since he can't dribble. I'm very about this trade... Afflalo was the one guy who I thought we could get cheaply and will really make a difference to our team next season, especially if Lawson isn't ready for prime time.

Getting him for a future 2nd rounder is a steal, helping out the Pistons cap room or not. Chauncey likes this kid also, so there is a bond already there from his time in DET. We need all the young guards we can get for Chauncey to mentor while he's here and leading the team... you never know what will develop thanks to the tutelage of a veteran player like Chauncey.

I've never heard of Arron Afflalo shutting anyone down. Not saying he can't or won't, but I've SEEN Dahntay Jones shut down CP3 for five games in a row in a playoff series. And that's not to say that Dahntay doesn't have liabilities as well (ie he can't shoot, dribble, or create anything with pass with any regularity), but I'm merely stating how things shake out on paper. We've lost a pretty good defender and now need Afflalo to show us he can shoulder the load.

With that said, I'm happy he's a Nugget and agree with Stumble that for a second round pick he was a steal. He can definitely fit in nicely for the Nuggets behind J.R. Smith at SG.

Nick, I will give it to you about DJ helping shut down CP3, but lets face it that was a team effort. DJones still only averaged about 20mpg that series, while Paul was in the game for almost the entire thing. So as a team, and a coaching staff, Denver did an excellent job. However, that is not to take away from DJones. He absolutely got in Paul's head and made life very difficult for him. However, DJones has never done that to any other player, and in most games is truly an average defender. I chaulk that up to Jones being a guy that is good and defending certain players (smaller PG's due to his quickness) but overall is an average defender. I know you don't know Arron Afflalo, but if you ask most Pistons fans, he was their defensive stopper on the perimeter. You will quickly find out Afflalo is a superior player both offensively and defensively than DJones. Oh, and he is much cheaper!
