(Denver-CO) The Denver Nuggets and Detroit Pistons are at it again. Only this time marquee players aren't trading places, but rather cash, picks, and seldom used players. Today's trade sent Arron Afflalo, Walter Sharpe, and cash considerations from the Detroit Pistons to Denver for a future second round pick from the Nuggets.
Afflalo will be a third-year player next season who averaged 4.9 points last season in 16.7 minutes per game in 2008-09. Sharpe was a rookie last season who only saw action in eight games. Along with both players, Denver will have $350,000 to apply to Walter Sharpe's $736,420 salary next season.
In my humble opinion, this trade was Denver scratching Joe Dumar's back from scratching theirs and trading Chauncey Billups and Antonio McDyess for Allen Iverson five games into last season. See, Detroit needed to clear a little salary cap space to pursue a big man and after the recent signings of Ben Gordan and Charlie Villanueva they will be able to do so with an estimated $3.5 million in cap space after completing this deal. As for the Nuggets, Afflalo will compete with Sonny Weems for what appears to be the back-up shooting guard spot, but I doubt Denver has much need for Sharpe's services with the current roster.
Jeremey over at Round Ball Mining Company has more on the Nuggets trade exception situation and I highly suggest you give it a read.
Go Nuggets!
