Why No Flight?

(Denver-CO) So I just left the Pepsi Center and I couldn't wait until the morning to get this off my chest... Why in the world would Chauncey Billups still be in at the start of the fourth quarter in a laugher of a preseason game against the lowly Timberwolves while a guy like James White hasn't even taken off his sweats?

It makes absolutely no sense to me!

There was a rumor going around Pepsi that he's sick, and there's still the rumor that Joey Graham already has favor from George Karl for the 13th spot on this year's roster, but I was at the arena an hour before tip-off and watched White warm-up for a good 30 minutes. White was working on his jump shot off of one dribble from a variety of spots on the floor with Assistant Coach Mosley. He looked good too. If I had to guess, he drained 80% of his shots.

For whatever the reason was why "Flight" couldn't/didn't play tonight it left me perturbed. And before I go any further, let me say I have nothing personally against Joey Graham. It's just that Joey Graham had a very Joey Graham-type night tonight: Six points and  four rebounds in 26 minutes of burn. He's a guy that's made a career out of nights like that.

Meanwhile, in the only preseason game he saw meaningful minutes in, White tied 'Melo for a team-high 13 points in  just 22 minutes.

My biggest fear with James White is his potential being realized in a different NBA uniform. It's going to happen. Maybe not this year, or next, but I truly do believe James "Flight" White is going to be a performer in this league. He's already led (acutally tied for the lead) the D-League in scoring, played very well overseas, and has unlimited raw athletic potential so it's only logical that the NBA future for White is bright. Furthermore, the Nuggets are very light at small forward with Renaldo Balkman listed as unofficially Carmelo Anthony's back-up at the position. And, even that is a stretch considering Balkman is making a bit of a position switch from the power spot.

So, in all reality, there isn't even another true small forward on the Nuggets roster. So what gives? Anyone with even a theory as to why James White has been banished to the end of the bench should leave a comment because I'm at a loss for ideas...

Ballhype: hype it up!

I'm confounded too...

but it is clear to me that our coaching situation could be improved. Is Karl trying some misguided motivational strategy here? He was quoted in the paper just a day or two ago saying that White would get more minutes, even acknoledging that he had been getting a raw deal on minutes that did not reflect what Karl thought he had earned. I mean, why even yank this guy's chain? What gives, George Karl?

At least he made AC ride the pine (or maybe AC was sick...can't think of any reason Karl would neglect his favorite pet).

I hate to say it, but I fear that George Karl will prevent the Nugs from ever reaching elite status with his bone-headed approach. Ever since he had his cancer ephiphany on life he lost his competitive fire and edge. Is the guy on propanolol or something? Prozac? He just doesn't seem to care or get fired up at all, and his decision making is suspect.

I hear ya!

I don't understand it for the life of me. Ty Lawson is obviously the back up point guard for this team, Anthony Carter is a nice insurance policy, Arron Afflalo looks nice as the back-up shooting guard, but yet there is still no reserve three on this team.

And by reserve three I mean someone who actually has the skills to play the position in its fundamental definition. A small forward needs to be able to dribble the ball, get his own shot, and still be able to rebound and play defense on a 6'7" or 6'9" opposing player.

Balkman has the defensive aspect of this down pat, but he doesn't stretch the defense around the three-point line like a guy like White would nor does he have the slashing game. Basically, he's a tweener.

I'm optimistically keeping my fingers crossed, but it's not looking good for J-Dub...

Yeah, it's ridiculous. Karl develops such a narrow-minded love for certain players, and like I said in the other comment, Joey Graham and Anthony Carter will both be stealing minutes from more productive players ALL YEAR LONG. White and his massive potential aside, there's no reason Graham should be playing in front of Balkman... he's just as bad of a shooter and not nearly as good of a rebounder, hustler, and defender -- what do we gain there?

And yeah, nothing irritates more than players not getting a chance and then turning into contributors elsewhere. Especially a guy that you can have on your roster for almost nothing, who isn't guaranteed, and is very young. Why the hell would you not give him some time to see how he plays? I really hope they don't cut him until his contract becomes guaranteed so maybe (MAYBE!) he'll get a chance to show what he can do.

For that matter, why Lawson hasn't gotten more time in the pre-season is beyond me. He was very productive looking at the box score last night but still only played 18 minutes. Isn't pre-season mainly for evaluating the players in order to see who can most readily contribute during the season? We know exactly what we get with freakin' Carter, so why not give Lawson more time? Karl doesn't make any sense to my brain already this year, and I know it's just starting...

I KNOW that guy will be starting in place of JR... Karl just knows how to push my buttons. Afflalo is fine, but Graham? I can see it now... me yelling at the TV at the start of every game.
Happy Birthday James White

Now hit the road!

Nice, Nuggets. White waived.
what a waste!

On his birthday! Didn't Denver trade for White? Why do that then cut him without giving him a decent shot? He had a great first game, then his minutes dropped to zero. It looks to me like Karl was afraid playing White would make it hard for him to justify keeping Graham, but with two extra spots he could have kept both. What a waste!
